"Put it in the bag??  But Daddy, I just found it"

Wearing his sporty soccer ball hat, 2 year old Thomas Papple seems a bit confused as to why he should have to put the Easter Egg he just found in the bag his dad Jimmy is holding. It didn't take long for him to catch on that the sooner he put the egg in the bag, the sooner he could go looking for more.  [PHOTO COURTESY BOB MILLER]

[EDITORS NOTE" My bad! Our dear friend Angela is dolled up with funky hair as part of her 80's themed birthday party. It is not, repeat NOT her everyday look...LOL]
Lots of Goodies

Merry Proulx shared this pix of her grandkids Easter gifts, on her facebook page. Looks like the Easter Bunny certainly didn't forget to make a stop in Welland, that's for sure!
Egg-citing Get Together

My fabulous family was at it again...gathering together for another delghtful dinner. This time around it was Easter and we celebrated at Kim and Don's home.

Although the highlight was the big meal, we also had an Easter Egg Hunt for the kids and lots of chocolate goodies for everyone to enjoy.

Above, my niece Erin and I ham it up with some Easter Eggs that Graham found. Looks like it's also time for Uncle Ken to hunt for his hair colour and hide those nasty roots. "Touch of grey" my ass!

And speaking of hams....below we see Don and Kim posing with the tasty honey ham we enjoyed for dinner. YUM YUM!

Here's a short clip of some of our Easter fun...

"Dude Tastes like a Bunny"

Did you find him? We hid the Easter Bunny in our sidebar and asked you to hunt for him. Although this was not a contest and just for fun, we were happy to hear from our readers who found the floppy-eared critter.

And just where was that darn bunny?  Why he was being eaten by Aerosmith frontman and Amercan Idol judge Steven Tyler -as we see here.

He Speaks for the Trees

It was an ideal way to enjoy a Saturday afternoon. My 6 year old nephew Graham and I went to see The Lorax in 3D. This was Graham's second time going to the movies (the first being Puss n' Boots last Fall.) We were a bit early arriving for the 4:20 showing, meaning we had the whole theatre to ourselves until a few more people showed up shortly before the movie began.

Once again Graham laughed out loud during many of the 3D effects and once again this proved to be the most entertaining part of the outing for Uncle Ken (there's something about watching "little man" reaching out to try and grab something floating in front of us or ducking when something leaped off the screen towards us, that is truly magical.)

Prior to the movie we stopped at a gas station so I could show curious Graham how I put gas in the car. Since he loves cars, he found this very interesting and commented that my car was thirsty and drinks gas.

With all the 3D movies they previewed prior to The Lorax, I'm pretty sure we'll be enjoying this type of fun again very soon.

Audrey or Erin?

The character Audrey from The Lorax reminded me of my niece Erin. Is it just me or do you agree?

A Father's Reaction to His Very Young Gay Son

Over the past few months my wife Amelia has asked numerous times what I think about our 7 year old son identifying as gay.

This is not something I thought I'd be writing so soon (OK, honestly, I never thought I would be writing a blog on an internationally known news website). When my wife and I were expecting our first child, we discussed what we would do if he or she were born with a disability or with a foot growing out of his or her head. Dealing with a child with a disability would be a life-changing event and something that we had to think about a lot. Possibly having a gay son or daughter wasn't like that. We didn't even have to discuss it, because it wouldn't be a problem. Although the head-foot would need to be dealt with immediately, we assumed we had 15 years or so before any of our kids said they were gay.

You know what they say about assuming: it makes all the asses come out in the comment sections of blogs -- people who don't know anything about my son other than the few guarded things my wife has written, and yet they seem to think they know so much. Let me say that most of the comments have been very supportive, and it's great to see the same people come to Ameila's defense whenever the occasional jerk butts into the conversation with some homophobic ideas. And many of jerk-butts (and some of the normal people, too) want to know what I think about this whole "gay thing."

The idea that I would be immediately disappointed/angry/suicidal that my son identifies as gay offends me, both as a father and simply as a human. It seems the further we all move along into the 21st century in terms of technology, the more some parts of society regress to the 1950s -- or the Victorian era, if we're being honest -- when it comes to ideas of social mores and attitudes on certain subjects: Ward Cleaver would have been angry if the Beaver had come out of the closet, so surely a father 60 years later would have the same reaction. I mean, come on, that's only common sense!
Excuse me while I roll my eyes for an hour or two.

I don't see how a father, or any parent, can look at their son, the one they've loved since before the child was even born, and upon hearing him say, "Dad, I'm gay," turn their back on him. The comments from men much older than me telling stories just like that break my heart. My wife always wants to adopt the teenage kids who write to her; I want to adopt the 60-year-old men who cry when they read that I tell my son how awesome he is. I don't care if they are as old as my father; they deserve love just as much as anyone else.

So many of the negative comments have been funny to Amelia and me because the people writing them obviously don't know our son. "Isn't your son's father going to miss teaching him sports?" "Isn't not having your child get married going to just break your heart?" "How does his father react to the prancing flamer that your son must be?"

First of all, as I write this, my shoulder is sore from throwing a football with him earlier. He loves sports (American Football is his favorite), and he can throw a really nice spiral, especially for a 7-year-old (although if he grows up to be my size, he'll either be a fine defensive end or the heaviest quarterback in the history of the NFL). And again, he's 7: as far as he's concerned, he's going to play all the positions -- at the same time. And if tomorrow he wants to start ballet classes, we will go to all his recitals and cheer him on just as loudly as if he were on the 50-yard line.

Getting married is up to him; single or married, he's still my son. If he and his maybe-some-day-far-far-in-the-future boyfriend want to tie the knot, they just need to tell his mother and me where to be, and we'll be there. Hopefully by then they can get married in whichever state they want, but if not, we'll just travel to one of the cool states and have a great time.

And the "flamer" comments... where to begin? Do effeminate men exist? Of course. Are all gay men effeminate? Of course not. But does it matter? Whether he grows up to be the manliest man in all mandom or the most effeminate guy to ever hit the drag-show circuit, he is my son. I want him to be loved, comfortable with himself and his friends, and happy. If that means he's the next RuPaul or Joe Montana (or just that nice guy in Accounts Receivable), he will know that being himself is important, no matter who he ends up growing into. And he will always know that his father loves him.

Are you peeking or have you already given up?

Give it another try.... Look at each word carefully. You'll kick yourself when you discover the answer. This is so cool.....

No, it is not that they all have at least 2 double letters….

Answer is below!

Answer: In all of the words listed, if you take the first letter, place it at the end of the word, and then spell the word backwards, it will be the same word. Did you figure it out?

Bunny Boy!

He's back, our buddy Dylan from Douglas, ON proudly poses for his mom Erin as he holds up his impressive Easter Bunny artwork. Like mother, like son...another artist in the works!

 READER'S COMMENTS:

Thanks for posting Dylan's pics on Scribbles! I showed him the site and he was thrilled....he thought it meant he was in the newspaper! hehe I explained it was like an online newspaper. He was so proud of that little bunny, as was I! lol Wishing you and everyone in the family a very happy Easter!

Gimme All Your Lovin'

I simply melted with delight when I saw Steph Tarczy's photo of her and her "boi" Harley. As I mentioned to Steph, even though 3 year old Harley looks nothing at all like my big kitty J.R., somehow I am sensing by this pix that the two are very much alike when it comes to wanting lots of love and attention.

And when I'm wearing my soft bathrobe (similar looking to what Steph is wearing here) J.R. can't wait to jump onto my lap for lots of cuddlin' and kissin'.

We just can't seem to get enough of our pets and fortunately for us, the feeling is unconditionally mutual!

Braving the Storm Under an Umbrella of Love

There's something magical about the bond our friends Jackie and Jen share. Happily married, these "silly sods" have certainly had their share of woes the past year or so. The couple once shared a lovely apartment in Toronto with their cat Rasmus (whom you may recall seeing in Scribbles, featured in photos reading a book, watching TV or exploring all the nooks and crannies of his home.)

Storm clouds hovered over the girls when last year Jen was diognosed with cancer. Although she had duel citizenship in Canada and her home land of America, confusion with official papers meant Jen would not be able to receive treatment in Toronto (correction, she could get treatment, it just wouldn't be covered by OHIP.) How would Jen get the treatments she so desperately needed without medical coverage? She would need to return to the States, that's how.

Initially Jen went back to the U.S. alone to begin treatment. Her family would be by her side, but Jackie would be left in Toronto where she'd have to extend her love and support via phone. It wasn't long before Jackie put life in Toronto on hold and joined her beloved in the U.S. Their belongings would be put in storage and their feline Rasmus would move in with friends of Jackie and Jen.

At a time when some couples might fall apart, the love between our brave friends J and J has done nothing but grown stronger. They've had bad days and they've had encouraging days and stood by each other's side throughout it all. Jen has made great progress in recent months, although she is not out of the woods quite yet. Jackie has remained in the States thoughout it all. Their strength absolutely astounds me. I am amazed by these lovely ladies and their postive attitude.
A fundraising website was set up last year for anyone who would like to offer support to Jen and we encourage all our Scribbles friends to do what they can to help make things a little brighter for her and Jackie.

CLICK HERE to go to "BE A GEM FOR JEN" website.

And to my dear friends Jen and Jackie I offer my love, prayers and support. You truly inspire me and I am so proud to call you my friends. I love you!

"Thanks Kenny for sharing the J's story on here. We all miss the J's badly & wish that they didn't have to be so far away to get the treatment that Jen needs. From what I've heard, Jen doing pretty well but we all need to send our positive... vibes down to her & help her believe that she will get through this. Jackie...I always knew you were 'brave & strong' but you seem to be finding more strength to carry on that any of us can imagine. Just know that your 'rock steady crew' is here routing for you & loving you both many times xx"

They're there when I am happy,
They're there when I am sad,
They sense when my pains and woes
  Have made me very mad.

They don't care if I look a fright,
And of that I'm very glad.
My hair's a mess, I need a bath,
But to them I don't look bad.

There are some who don't appreciate
The bond between animal and lad.
I don't quite understand those folks,
And it makes me kinda sad.

For they are missing unconditional love,
  That's surely not a fad.
Cuz my pets are undoubtedly,
The best friends I've ever had.

Looks like Little Red Riding Hood is missing a few front teeth in this cute photo of Graham Storie-Clark doing his impression of the fairy tale character.

The Many Faces of Brett Woods

Lip-syncing on a stage to the song of your choice is something most of us could probably pull off given enough support or liquid courage. Even if we forget the lyrics, as long as our lips are moving, it's not that bad, yet not really an art either.

To bring it to a level of excellence, one must practise and have talent. Knowing all the words is never enough. You must have a real stage presence complete with a well choreographed routine and amazing outfits to be memorable and become a real artist at it. Many may try, but only a few succeed.

Enter Niagara's own Brett Woods. Brett is a local lip-sync sensation and truly a master of his craft. It may not be his voice coming from the speakers, but he is living every word we hear through his actions, his dancing and his elaborate costumes. One look and it's easy to see why this handsome young talent has become so popular across Southern Ontario and Western New York.

He's not a King, nor a Queen, but this former Niagara Sovereign Imperial Court Emperor is indeed Royalty.

Brett, here's to you and your amazing and abundant talent. From fun to fundraisers, you are indeed a force to be reckoned with and someone I very much admire. And to show you how much, here is a little video clip highlighting some of your many looks (Yes, this is the surprise I referred to a few weeks ago.)  Hope you enjoy it my friend!

New Dynamic Duo
Shelly Stewart (inset) has a new companion, similar to the dog featured above.

Great news from Shelly Stewart's corner of the world. She now has a new guide dog. According to a friend, Shelly's new partner is a 53 pound female yellow lab named Reese. Shelly refers to her as a "powder puff", our source says.

I'm so excited for Shelly and cannot wait to meet her new four-legged friend!

A Balmy March Day in Florida?  Nope. It's Ontario!

The farmers might not like it, but you'd be hard pressed to find many others who aren't loving our unseasonably warm weather. It may be mid March, but recent temperatures of 20 celcius and higher have made it feel more like early Summer.

Above is a photo taken in Barrie, ON last week. Barrie is renown for having lots of snow and this time of year the ground is usually covered in the white stuff. But as we can see, it's been perfect beach weather for everyone. Surfs up!
