Upcoming Book Shares Lisa Marie Presley's Story

Born to an American myth and raised in the wilds of Graceland, Lisa Marie Presley was never truly understood . . . until now. Before her death in 2023, she’d been working on a raw, riveting, one-of-a-kind memoir for years, recording countless hours of breathtakingly vulnerable tape, which has finally been put on the page by her daughter, Riley Keough.

In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir.

A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and grieved.

Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, laid in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them. About getting dragged screaming out of the bathroom as she ran towards his body on the floor. About living in Los Angeles with her mother, getting sent to school after school, always kicked out, always in trouble. About her singular, lifelong relationship with Danny Keough, about being married to Michael Jackson, what they shared in common. About motherhood. About deep addiction. About ever-present grief. Riley knew she had to fulfill her mother’s wish to reveal these memories, incandescent and painful, to the world.

To make her mother known.

This extraordinary book is composed of both Lisa Marie’s and Riley’s voice, a mother and daughter communicating across the transom of death as they try to heal each other. Profoundly moving and deeply revealing, From Here to the Great Unknown is a book like no other—the last words of the only child of a true legend.

More Memories of Our Pal Jeff - plus His Obituary

In a follow-up to our PASSAGES post (remembering the fun times we had with our recently departed friend Jeff Stewart) below is his obituary, which was posted to The Toronto Star on July 27.

Since our tribute post in late June, I have received several messages from friends who also remembered Jeff from his time in St. Catharines. I was reminded that Jeff was involved with the Imperial Court of St. Catharines/Niagara and put his accounting skills to good use, volunteering as the group's treasurer for 4 years. You can bet that every penny was accounted for, when Jeff was in charge.

In my tribute post I shared how much fun I had with Jeff in spring 2001, when we went on vacation in the Bahamas. It's a moment in my life I will always remember fondly.  I also recently recalled the time Jeff and I attended the live broadcast of The Juno Awards in March 2001. The award ceremony changes location each year and that year it was in Hamilton, and somehow we had tickets.

We weren't exactly rubbing elbows with Canada's finest musicians, but we were close enough to see all the action. It was fascinating how they feverishly prepared the various stages between acts. There's a lot more going on than what we see on TV and it was cool to be a fly on the wall, sorta speak.

We also got "lost" and ended up on the celebrity side of a gate, We were standing not that far from Gerald Eaton, lead singer of The Philosopher Kings. He was talking to the crowd and signing his autograph for admirers. We were very, very close to where he was, until a security guard motioned for us to get on the other side with the rest of the fans. He was a very large, intimidating guy, so we listened.

It was another amusing memory with Jeff that I will cherish forever.

JEFF STEWART'S OBITUARY

STEWART, JEFFERY HAROLD March 27, 1970 – June 20, 2024.  It is with heartache and sadness we announce the sudden passing of Jeff on June 20th, while vacationing in Europe.

He was 54 years old. Devoted and loving husband of the late Frank G. Ficnar (2022). Jeff is survived by his father, Charles; and his siblings, Amy, Todd and Craig. He also says goodbye to his nieces, Isabell, Karly, Serina and nephew Baily. He was predeceased by his mother, Marcia (1990). Jeff will be remembered always with love by Claudia, Frank Sr. and Leonie.

He will also be missed by many friends. Jeff had big dreams and an even bigger heart.

We invite family and friends to join us in celebrating a life that ended too soon. A funeral service will be held at Highland Funeral Home, Scarborough (3280 Sheppard Avenue E., Toronto), on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a time of fellowship and refreshment in the Sheppard Lounge of the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.arbormemorial.ca/en/highland-scarborough

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my sister JANE

POSTED TO FACEBOOK SUN. JUL. 21/24

Jane & my family will be joining me later this afternoon for a BBQ Birthday Party at my place. I've got things set up inside and outside, so if it's raining or super humid, we can be inside (we usually end up doing parts inside and parts outside.)

When we lived on Rebecca Street, right up until it was just my mom living there, we always did a BBQ for Jane's birthday. I lived in an apartment building in those days. Now I live in a house and my mom and sisters all live in apartments. Kim gave me the BBQ a few years ago, so about 4-5 years ago, I brought back the annual family BBQ for Jane's Birthday.

My leg has been a bit stubborn last few days. I have been preparing for the party inside and out so likely that was the culprit. It's nothing like 2 months ago, so I am thankful for that.

Scribbles.co will feature more about Jane's Birthday soon.

Happy [Number Deleted] Birthday Sister Jane. Love you lots.

Toodles!

[Description of photo: It's a photo of Jane and Ken taken around 1979, coincidentally, that's also the year Scribbles began, then known as Sunny Digest.]

I'm a Proud Canadian!

I am proud to live in Canada. Yes things are rough, but take a look at the world. Every country is struggling with the exact same issues.

Covid really hit the planet in the balls and the after pain continues to make life hard. It's going to take a while to set things right & I'm thankful Canada is at least trying to do stuff and have little patience for those who cry foul without having a plan to replace it.

For the most part, Canada is still a country made up of kind, caring people. We're a "love thy neighbour" kinda place.

Of course there's always tragic exceptions who are far from kind or neighbourly. But for every one of these horrible people we hear of in the news & social media, there's countless kind acts happening across our grand country.

People doing nice things for their family, their friends, their community, even a total stranger. They don't do it to get in the headlines or get hits on their website. They do it because it is the decent thing to do. Hell many of these kind souls don't want any fuss or recognition at all. Instead they anonymously keep the joy of their kind act between them and those they help.

Canada still has more people who are kind & caring and embrace our diversity, than those who do not. I truly believe this and it is one of the many reasons I am proud to be a Canadian.

HAPPY CANADA DAY EVERYONE!!
