PASSAGES | Dr. Smith Truly Made Us Smile

Dr. Smith's Obituary

SMITH, Dr. David John Kirvell .After a courageous battle with cancer, David passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 23, 2019 in his 73rd year. Beloved husband of 49 years to Pat (nee DiSapio). Proud father of Paul (Krystyne), Dr. Daryl (Nadia), and Dr. Judene Benoit (Andre). Doting grandfather of his "wild ones" Anika, Sofia, and Wilder. Much loved brother to Ron (Pat), Lois (Victor), and Dennis (Madeleine), and brother-in-law to Jim (Ina). David will be lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Herbert and Effie (nee Bowland).

He will also be missed by his other family at Smith Family Dentistry

David served the St. Catharines community as a dentist for 44 years with compassion and integrity. He was proud that all three of his children also chose careers in the dental field and worked directly with him.

In honour of his dedication and generosity in helping patients in need, donations to Community Care's dental assistance program and the United Way's Brushed Aside denture program will be welcomed via George Darte Funeral Home

Growing up in White River, Ottawa, and North Bay, he developed a great love of the outdoors. An avid canoeist, bowler, and golfer; he will be missed by all of his many friends.

When he wasn't in the office, he loved to be in the wilderness of northern Quebec or at his cottage on Stoney Lake. A lifelong learner, he was passionate about pure mathematics, genealogy, and the sciences. But above all, he loved his family.

EDITORIAL | We're All in It Together

Hi everyone!
Summer is sizzlin' all around us and nowhere is that more true than with you...our amazing Scribbles gang. You've been making the most out of every heat-filled moment with celebrations and holidays.

Our "biggies" this time out would be our two Ottawa Valley themed posts and Scribbles Videos. Let Love Grow gives you an intimate look at what it was like at Megan & Andy's wedding, held in a large field in rural Renfrew. It was almost surreal seeing so many of you at the big event and not just because you saved me a chunk of cash in postage fees when I gave you your Scribbles keychains. LOL!

I won't lie, I was a bit scared during the storm's climax as that large tent flapped and roared with the down pouring of the rain and crashes of thunder. Sitting in an area where there were plenty of kids meant I had to keep my cool and act all grown up about it all, but I was eyeballing the nearest exit just in case.

I'm so happy for Megan & Andy. Love truly grows in this family and I'm proud to be a part of it.

Many of you had cause to celebrate in the past few weeks. First it was graduations then it was Canada Day and we have cool collages of you enjoying both.

Scribbles Dunnville friend Kathryn Stengel shares her stunning photography and the mission of By the Willow, which she is associated with. Bekah, Dave & Chris have new dogs at their homes, we have a new Scribbles pal and we review two more movies.

This is our last multiple posts update until September. For the remainder of the summer, we'll have fewer posts, released singularly not in groups (So no "10 New Posts" till the fall.)

Lately I've been reminded of how just unique Scribbles is through our interactions with those darn keychains or from seeing you in Renfrew. It's a pretty one-of-a-kind entity and it thrills me beyonf words to play ringmaster to all of it.

Happy summer, enjoy YOUR new Scribbles posts.

Ken  xoxo

MOVIE REVIEW | The Intruder Definitely Isn't Mr. Roger's Neighborhood

In The Intruder, a young couple buy a beautiful home in Napa Valley, but encounter trouble when the previous owner refuses to let go of the stately manor. It’s kinda like Fatal Attraction without the boiled bunny.

Dennis Quaid is perfectly cast as the psychotic prior home owner who becomes absolutely unhinged when the new owners don’t follow his strict routines. Quaid’s performance steals the show.

The Intruder gives us suspense without resorting to over the top gore or computer generated effects.

If you’re looking for a few good chills, yet not enough to keep you up all night afterwards, The Intruder will do the trick.

MOVIE REVIEW | Yesterday's Troubles Aren't So Far Away

After watching the movie Yesterday, I went online to see what the critics thought of it. Talk about polarizing. While some said it was superb, others slammed the film, with one referring to it as the worst movie she’d ever seen (obviously that reviewer has never seen Mama Mia 2, which not even an appearance by the iconic Cher could save.)

To bridge the gap between these opposing points of view, let me toss my 2 cents into to the opinion pool. Yesterday is neither the best nor the worst of movies... and that’s both a problem and a pity. A film that pays homage to the Beatles massive library had the opportunity to knock it out of the park. Instead it merely walks to first base.

The premise, without revealing more than the film’s trailers have, finds the world a strange place where the Beatles and the mania that they caused, has never existed. Only the lead character Jack Malik, played by Himesh Patel - a down on his luck musician, remembers the Fab Four and claim’s their lyrics as his own. Yes, the concept is a bit odd but if you go into it anticipating you will be asked to use your imagination, it makes the impossible plausible and the movie somewhat more tolerable.

Yesterday does bring us rearranged covers of the Beatles songs, something that has worked in the past for other films such as Across the Universe and is entertaining here as well. But where it failed for me was about midway when the plot not only thickened, it congealed. The “no Beatles” story was still present, but seemed to take a back seat to another storyline, one that’s been used repeatedly for decades on the big screen and has been done better.

John Lennon asked us to Imagine a world of peace while Yesterday asks us to imagine the planet without the four lads from Liverpool. I’m still holding out hope for Lennon’s vision but have little of it left for Yesterday.
