that Saved Scribbles

So, here's the scoop...as enjoyable as it is to bring you scribbles, it can sometimes take a while to put it all together. Most of the times, this is no big deal, but with my pains, recent hospital visits and trying to squeeze some working hours into the big picture, there's not a lot of time left for recreation. 

I gave it some thought and came to the conclusion it was probably time to say goodbye to scribbles website. I could use facebook to post pix and videos instead. Heck, I even put together a goodbye video!

Enter Jackie, Alina and three little pigs. Jackie is a new online friend who only recently discovered scribbles and really loves it. Alina is Rob's niece, who was baptised on Sept 11th and her mother Heather told me how she was looking forward to seeing the event on scribbles. And those three little pigs? They escaped their pen at Happy Rolph's and our pal Ginger immediately sent us a photo labelling it a "scribbles exclusive".

Suddenly putting scribbles out to pasture seemed a bit premature. There's still so much to share. If I can't get to the updates as often as before, so be it. You all understand (as you've reminded me time and time again) when I'm not feeling great and you end up waiting a bit longer.

Besides scribbles has often been the glue that keeps me from cracking up completely. I'd surely go stir crazy without my favourite outlet to express myself to my friends. Scribbles stays and that farewell video can go in the vault for now.

You'll find articles below on our new pal Jackie, Alina's baptism and those runaway pigs. Thanks to each of them for reminding me of the unique appeal of scribbles. How could I put an end to that??

Big Day for Alina

We've featured Alina Dennis on scribbles since the day she arrived into the world in January. The little angel has stolen the show, as we've proudly presented photos of her wearing pretty headbands and looking so cute.

Recently Alina's parents Heather and Rodney had her baptised. The ceremony took place in Dain City on Sept 11th. Friends and family were on hand to watch as Alina was officially welcomed into the church.

She squirmed a bit when her head was anointed with holy water and as a result got a little of the precious liquid in her eye. But being the trooper she is, Alina barely fussed about it and was all smiles after the big moment was over.

What a special day and one I was honoured to be invited to share and thankful that I was feeling well enough to attend -although I did have to take a pass on the reception at the Dennis home afterwards. Congratulations Alina.

Giddy Up!

Who is that beneath the helmet and sunglasses?

Why it's our friend Diane Murray, who proves once again you're never too old to learn something new.

This was her first time on a horse and it appears the wait has just made it that much more enjoyable. Diane told us she had a great time.

Way to go "Endora!", you're the best sister a warlock like Uncle Arthur could ask for.

Pam's Nuts about "Chippy"

There's no shortage of reasons for our pal Pam Hopkins to enjoy a visit to her trailer in Burk's Falls and one of them is her little pal "Chippy". Chippy takes peanuts right from Pam's hand and often stuffs them in his cheeks (as we see above) before rushing away.

Pam tells us Chippy's not the only wildlife enjoying a bite at her home away from home. Some of the birds are quite vocal if they feel its time for another feeding from Pam, even if it wasn't that long ago that she already fed them.

Sounds like it's a jungle out there Pammy, and one that sounds like a lot of fun to be a part of.

A Shiny Key and Sticky Fingers, But No New Car

After 32 years, it's never gotten old. I just love when someone comes along who we introduce to scribbles for the first time.

Our "newbie" scribbles friend is Jackie Skinner-Raposo of Burlington, ON. We "met" when we shared comments on a local radio station's facebook page. The station had recently tweaked its playlist and neither of us liked it. Since then Jackie and I have gotten to know each other a bit better.

Jackie has amazing luck when it comes to contests. She's won a trip, concert tickets (most recently Def Leppard and Heart) and more. She also won a key that could possibly start the engine of a new smart car. The winner would be revealed on Labour Day during Burlington's Ribfest.

We posted a good luck message to Jackie on scribbles and she was so pleased to see it. "Hi Ken! I was blown away! I can't believe you did that for me ! Thank you so much. I loved it." , she wrote.

And after checking out scribbles Jackie later told us, "I couldn't believe your website. So sophisticated and informative."

Boy Jackie, that's a very nice thing to say about scribbles, I don't believe we've every been called "sophisticated" before, I know I personally haven't, not sure about scribbles though...LOL!  I'm sorry you didn't win the smart car, but at least you got to thoroughly enjoy that rib sauce!

Lookin' Good, Under the Hood

Rob was excited to show my brother-in-law Don and his father Jim what it looks like under the hood of his classic '87 Buick LeSabre - when we were all gathered at the Papple's home for my niece Erin's 16th birthday.

The real reason Rob likes to pop his hood, is because of the unique way it opens. Throw in a pair of fuzzy dice and it's very groovy baby....LOL!

Little Piggies Break Free!

Ginger Blythin was quick to squeal, after she witnessed three little piggy's break free from their pen at Happy Rolph's.  She forwarded this pix to us marked: "scribbles exclusive" and also noted that there was another fence surrounding the entire small animal section- so the little breakout artists didn't get too far.

Early to Bed and Early to Rise,
Might make her Tired, But oh so Wise!

Going back to school may rule, but when your classes start bright and early, it's not so cool.

Such is the case for my niece Erin Papple, she attends high school in St Catharines and this year they've opted for earlier start and finish times. As a result, Erin and her classmates are done school each day by 2:30pm, meaning there's lots of the day left for homework and other activities.

On the down side, classes at Erin's school begin at 8:10am, meaning students need to be at school before 8 am in order to be in class on time. Yipes! That's brutal Erin!!

When your Uncle Ken was in high school (in the horse-and-buggy days...LOL), classes started at 8:50 am, which was early enough for me. Can't imagine trying to be awake, alert and ready to learn at 8:10 am. Good luck and be sure to get to bed early on school nights.

He Likes it Little

My mom's cat looks pretty squished, tucked all up in the little cat bed I brought to him while his "Mommy" was away in August. Truth is, Sensi doesn't have to use that baby-sized bed, as we see above, because he also has a nice big bed to stretch out in. To each their own I suppose.

During her recent visit with her sister Connie Farquharson, my mother wrote out some of Connie's favourite recipes. When she got home, she put them into her computer and that's where I stole them from....LOL!  Actually mom knows I'm featuring them and I'm sure my Aunt Connie won't mind me sharing her secrets with our scribbles pals.

Bread Pudding

2 cups granulated sugar

5 large eggs

2 cups milk

2 tsp pure vanilla

3 cups cubed Italian Bread, cut and cubed (allowed to stale overnight in a bowl)

1 cup packed light brown sugar

¼ cup butter softened

1 cup pecans

Preheat oven 350. Grease 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan

Mix together granulated sugar, eggs, milk in a bowl, add vanilla. Pour over cubed bread and let sit for 10 minutes. In another bowl, mix and crumble together brown sugar, butter and pecans. Pour bread mixture into prepared ingredients. Sprinkle brown sugar mixture over top and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until set. Remove from oven .

Serve with Half and Half

Butter Tart Squares


¼ cup margarine (softened)

1/3 cup packed brown sugar

1 cup flour, Pinch of salt

Topping

1 ¼ c up packed brown sugar

1 tbsp flour , Pinch of salt

1 tbsp butter softened

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

1 ¼ cup raisins

1/3 cup chopped pecans

Base

Preheat oven 350 degrees Spray 8 inch square cake pan with Pam. Beat butter and brown sugar in medium bowl until creamy. Add flour and salt and stir until well combined and crumbly. Press mixture into bottom of prepared pan and bake l2 – 15 minutes or until pale golden around edges

Topping:

Stir brown sugar with flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Add butter, eggs,, vanilla and stir until well blended and smooth. Stir in raisins and pecans. Pour filling over base and return to oven for 20-25 minutes, until golden and bubbly around the edges, but still just slightly jiggley in the centre (It will puff up a bit as it bakes and then settle again when you remove from oven) Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Slice into squares (Maked 16 squares)

Frozen Peach Pie Filling


9 pounds peaches

2 tsp fruit fresh (a preservative that prevents fruit from turning dark)

3 ½ cups sugar

½ cup plus 2 tb
sp quick cooking tapioca

¼ cup fresh lemon juice

1 tsp salt

Peel, half, pit and slice peaches and put in a bowl. Stir together fruit fresh and sugar, then stir into peaches. Stir in remaining ingredients

Line 4 pie pans with heavy foil, placing a piece of Saran Wrap over foil. Let lining extend 5 inches over edges of pie plate. Put 4 – 5 cups filling in each pie plate, loosely fold wrapping around pie, freeze until firm. When filling is frozen solid, remove from pans and wrap tightly. Return to freezer until ready to use.

On pie baking day, simply pop frozen pie filling into a pastry lined pan, dot with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon. Top with an additional pastry crust and seal well. Bake at 400 degrees 50 – 60 or until juices begin bubble through crust. If you feel the crust is browning too fast, lower temp to 350 – 375.

The Young and the Restless fires four actors

Melody Thomas Scott is safe, but four more actors are kaput.

After being absent for months, longtime Young and the Restless actress Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) will finally return to the daytime series, according to TV Guide’s Michael Logan. Unfortunately, her return comes on the heels of some show exits.

The series let go four actors on Wednesday, according to Soaps in Depth. Eden Riegel (Heather), Darius McCrary (Malcolm), Sean Patrick Flanery (Sam) and Tristan Rogers (Colin) have all been given their walking papers.

The news broke before all of the actors were informed. Riegel took to Twitter upon hearing the story, writing, “It’s not for me to say they’re wrong but I have not been told of my departure. Boy would that be embarrassing.”

Colour the actress embarrassed, because she confirmed on Twitter that she had been handed down the news a little while later.

The housecleaning had many fans abuzz, wondering if it meant Scott would finally return to the series. Sure enough, the 55-year-old actress will return to the set in October and first grace television screens again by the American thanksgiving.

 

Eastwood supports gay marriage

LOS ANGELES - He won’t be riding the main float during Pride, but Clint Eastwood doesn’t care if same-sex couples get married.

In the October issue of GQ Magazine, the steely gazed slab of machismo says he doesn’t think gay marriage should be such a controversial issue.

“These people who are making a big deal about gay marriage?” Eastwood tells the magazine. “I don’t give a fuck about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?! We’re making a big deal out of things we shouldn’t be making a deal out of ... Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want.”

The Oscar-winning director is promoting “J. Edgar,” his biopic about J. Edgar Hoover, the controversial longtime FBI chief, who many suspected to be closeted.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars as the bureau chief, also thinks that the gay marriage debate has been overblown.

“That’s the most infuriating thing — watching people focus on these things,” DiCaprio told GQ. “Meanwhile, there’s the onset of global warming and these incredibly scary and menacing things with the future of our economy.”

Though DiCaprio is a prominent supporter of liberal causes and candidates, Eastwood is known as one of Hollywood’s few Republicans. However, he maintains that his attitude is in keeping with his political beliefs.

“I was an Eisenhower Republican when I started out at 21, because he promised to get us out of the Korean War,” Eastwood tells the magazine. “And over the years, I realized there was a Republican philosophy that I liked. And then they lost it. And libertarians had more of it. Because what I really believe is, let’s spend a little more time leaving everybody alone.”

“J. Edgar” hits theaters on Nov. 9. It’s written by Dustin Lance Black (“Milk“), an openly gay screenwriter who has been active in the marriage equality movement.  

Steven Tyler Mourns loss of Dad

Rocker Steven Tyler is in mourning after his father died in early Sept.

The Aerosmith star's dad Victor Tallarico passed away at the Hunt Community assisted living facility in Nashua, New Hampshire, aged 95.

The World War II veteran, who was also a musician, was surrounded by family when he died peacefully at the facility.

His obituary reads, "Victor was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Susan Ray (Blancha) Tallarico. He leaves a brother, Ernest Tallarico, of Tampa, Florida, two children, Steven and Lynda; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many friends.

"Among Victor's proudest accomplishments were his offspring: Lynda, a retired teacher who resides in southern Vermont, and Steven, who, having been well launched into the music business by Victor, became famous as Steven Tyler, the lead singer of the rock band Aerosmith.

The Sun Finally Sets in Pine Valley

After being a daytime staple for 41 years, All My Children aired its final episode on Fri. Sept. 23. ABC is replacing the veteran soap with a new cooking show called "The Chew" [which just happens to rhymn with "The View", the network's popular talk show.]

It's Been a Gas, Gas, Gas!

It's hard to imagine how it could possibly have been 32 years ago that I picked up some paper, a pen and crayons and made what would eventually become scribbles. In those early years, a single copy hand drawn magazine called Sunny Digest would make its way from one reader to another. You read it and then it went on to someone else (way beyond its time for being "earth friendly".)


In the early 90's scribbles became a multi-copy magazine. I'd create the master copy, take it to the local printers where'd I'd make my copies. then home for collating, colouring and labelling and voula, you have scribbles magazine. To offset costs, subscribers paid a modest fee to receive their very own copy. In its prime we had a circulation of 60 copies. That's a helluva lot of collating, folding, stapling and colouring -believe me!

In 1996, scribbles signed off as a hard copy magazine and landed on the internet as a newsletter, emailed to the scribbles elite! There was no website then, instead you received all your scribbles info in your inbox. Our mailing list grew as more people went online over those years.

Our website launched in 2007 and was an immediate hit amongst its loyal followers. Now you could enjoy scribbles anytime, anywhere simply by visiting our site. We still kept our mailing list, to let you know when we'd made updates and added exciting new things for you to enjoy. That mailing list has continued to grow to this day.

No matter how we've gotten scribbles to you, we trust you have continued to be entertained.
