When everything feels like an uphill struggle, just think of the view from the top

It’s never easy to say goodbye especially when that final farewell is going out to many all at the same time. Such is the case with several extremely popular TV series. Recently we had back-to-back finales with the phenomenal Schitt’s Creek ending its 6 year run and Modern Family signing off after 11 seasons the very next night.

Although both shows wrapped up with storylines which were mostly logical conclusions, Schitt’s Creek was clearly the victor here. That can be contributed in part to the way the show tugged at our heartstrings over the years, making us fall in love with each and every colourful character. It can also be contributed to the fact that the series concluded after only 6 seasons when it could easily have lasted much longer.

It felt like we were really getting to know the residents of Schitt’s Creek only to have them leave us. This was done by design. Co-producer and costar Dan Levy has always said the game plan was to have the storylines conclude after only a few short seasons. They had a story to tell and when it was told that would be all she wrote. “Always leave them wanting more” seems appropriate here.

Meanwhile on Modern Family, characters were sent packing in all directions. Although some of it made sense, much of the final storyline seemed rather contrived. As a result, it ended with a whimper instead of a bang and never did address who the characters were being interviewed by throughout the entire series.

In the weeks ahead two more once mighty shows will take their final bow. The reboot of Will & Grace will ride off into the sunset after 3 seasons. The show’s recent salute to I Love Lucy was hilarious, but sadly not typical of all new episodes. It will be sad to see it go but even the most devout fan would agree, it is time.

Also leaving us is How To Get Away With Murder. In this case 6 seasons was a few too many. What started out as a riveting, suspenseful drama, became an unintentional joke in the last few seasons. Not even the world’s most notorious serial killers could get away with as many homicides as this unfortunate group. Enough already.

Ironically each of the series above featured prominent gay characters and while some were a tad stereotypical (we're talking you Modern Family), others shined brightly, revealing we’re not so different after all. We are really going to miss that.

video... Create Amazing Storage Units Using Household Items

If you've ever searched for do-it-yourself decorating and organizing videos on You Tube, you will know there's literally hundreds of them to choose from. While most of them have an idea or two that looks like something you might like to try, too many others use materials and supplies that we may not be able to find in stores, or that would be pretty costly to put together.

That's where the following 30 minute video differs. When they say you can use items found around your home to make these items, it's actually true. Cardboard boxes, toilet paper rolls, plastic containers, cereal food boxes, baby food bottles and many more things we have on hand are given new life thanks to these creative ideas.

The only thing you'll need to purchase would be various tapes, glue, screws, plugs and craft paints...and some of you likely have these things already.

Of all the DIY videos I've watched (and believe me that's been many) THIS one truly stands out.

[NOTE: You don't have to decorate your creations quite as elaborately as they do in this video. Some of the creations I liked better before she added scrapbook paper and other decor.]

Praising the Messenger

We’re seeing true heroes among us, all doing their part in the Covid 19 pandemic. The doctors, nurses, PSW's, janitorial & everyone in the medical field, first responders, law enforcement, freight truckers, grocery store staff, volunteers and so many, many others. Without question there’s many people to be grateful for.

Sadly we’re also seeing some people who are taking advantage of the situation. Purchasing large quantities of products, then reselling them at ridiculous prices. There’s others who are still not staying home or using social distancing, like somehow they’re immune to what’s going on, putting us all in harm’s way.

Whether the news is grim, enlightening or makes us angry, we know about it all thanks to the media. TV. Radio. Online. Print. We turn to these in times of trouble. They keep us up to the minute with what’s going on. They aren’t front line in the Covid 19 battle, but they are still there, all in order to keep us informed.

Some of us are limiting our exposure to the news because it makes us anxious. We can do that. But for those who work in the media the show must go on. The news is grim and it’s their job to tell us about it every single day. That can’t be easy.

Here’s a big thank you to the media. Be it TV, radio, print or online. In good times and in bad. Thanks for continuously keeping us in the know. It may go unnoticed but it’s truly appreciated.

your recipe... Kerri's Banana Bread

Ok kids, here's a recipe that I can tell you firsthand is delicious. No, I didn't attempt to make it myself, but Kerri did bring me some on a recent visit (just before she took off for Cuba -seen above.)

This recipe, not unlike Kerri herself, really rocks. ENJOY!

1 cup mashed banana
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup sour cream
2 eggs beaten
1 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt

Combine wet ingredients...add dry to wet until mixed. Bake at 325 for 1 1/4 hours. You can also add chocolate chips which is also very yummy!

Kerri wrote in 2013 "A friend recently used the base of my recipe but substituted 1/4 cup of applesauce instead of oil and 3/4 cup of Splenda instead of sugar for those who may be diabetic/health conscious and she said it tastes delicious as well."

editorial... What a Difference a Month Makes

Hello Friends, Just over a month ago I presented a group of new Scribbles posts. That feels like a lifetime ago now that our world has been turned upside down and inside out. It’s hard to compare this pandemic to another era from our past because (thankfully) there hasn’t been a time quite like this before.

But within all the abrupt changes, hysteria and anxiety regarding what happens next, we have also seen incredible acts of strength, kindness and creativity.

Doctors, nurses and others in the medical field have faced the enemy with bravery and determination. Federal, provincial and local governments have put their differences aside to work together with our best interests in mind.

Businesses have come up with new ways to serve their clientele online, via drive-thru's and with curbside pickups. Grocery stores have gone above and beyond to ensure the safety and well-being of their devoted employees and customers. Factories have been retrofitted to produce much-needed supplies including ventilators, masks, gloves and hand sanitizer.

The entertainment industry had come up with creative ways for self isolating fans to listen to live music with living room concerts. Online there’s virtual visits available to tour museums, zoos and amusement parks from around the world.

And individuals have stepped up to ensure family, friends and neighbours are safe and have food to eat, all while keeping within a safe distance from one another.

Last week, we presented a series of encores with the goal of making you feel happy. Today we offer over 20 all new posts to continue making you smile. I figured y'all have lots of time so why not give you lots of posts to enjoy.
