YOU | The Great Outdoors

NOTE: Scribbles features "YOU" and "ME" will now be combined and go under the new title "US"

ARTFUL | Berry Nice

With the school and event closings, traffic issues and how difficult it is just to walk outside, it can be very easy to look at ice storms with an extremely critical eye.  But sometimes the ice can produce some very beautiful affects.

In the Icy Berries photo above, our Niagara Falls pal Neil makes us forget the nastier side of ice storms with this magnificent image. It was the ideal piece to kick off Scribbles new 'Artful' feature.

new feature | HAPPINESS | A Tasty Tradition

As featured in: Renfrew, Ontario. Canada|  Facebook page

"Wes’ Chips has been a longstanding tradition in the Ottawa Valley since 1960. People have travelled far and wide to get a taste of the famous Wes’ french fries! What began as a simple, mobile chip truck has now become a permanent landmark on Madawaska Boulevard in Arnprior.
It all began in 1960, when Wes & Monique Dodds bought an old 1956 Ford truck. They set up their business selling french fries on old Highway 17.
Wes experimented with different potatoes and oil until he developed the “secret recipe”. The reputation of Wes’ Chips grew through word of mouth and loyal customers who returned year after year...."
Eventually Wes and Monique retired. The business was sold to Karen Bretzlaff & Andre Post. "...They learned the secret to success from Wes"
"To the present day, Wes’ Chips continues to operate out of the original 1956 Ford, selling the same great tasting french fries.
The dedicated staff return year after year to provide friendly and efficient service to their customers."

PASSAGES | Don Papple

For many years, Don Papple was my brother-in-law. That changed a few years ago, but the precious memories we shared in the "good ol' days" still remained.

Below is a new Scribbles Video in honour of Don, who passed away Friday, February 8th at the age of 67.

As with past tribute videos for extended family members, there were a lot of photos and rare video footage for me to explore. This task always make me smile as well as cry.  There were many pictures and clips that featured both Don and our friend Bob Miller, who passed away last August. I never realized how often that amusing dynamic duo hung out, until I put this video together. Maybe they're reunited somewhere up in heaven, side-by-side exchanging tales and corny jokes.

Don's passing is another sobering reminder that life is precious and short. Be sure to live it to its fullest.

PETS | A Tasty Little Morsel

We like to think we're doing the right thing by recycling whenever possible, but did you know that recycling incorrectly costs thousands of dollars annually. Here's excerpts from a post by Norma Jean MacPhee at CBC News...

Food residue is the No. 1 culprit for contaminating viable plastic product for markets. The top problem items landing in the garbage that should be recycled are peanut butter jars and canned tomato sauce.

People don't like to rinse those containers out because they are gooey, they are sticky and they do take a little more effort to rinse out... Some people complain cleaning those types of containers can waste water, but you can wash them along with their dishes.

Shampoo, conditioner and body-wash bottles [should be rinsed out before recycling.]

Along with the required rinsing, another big no-no is stacking tin cans or stuffing smaller plastic items into larger plastic containers, even if everything involved is recyclable....[It is best to place items loosely in your recycle bin, not stacked.]

Containers with a mixture of materials -including plastic and waxy heavy paper - are regular garbage, not recyclables.

Plastic coffee cup lids are recyclable, but the cup is garbage.

YOU | Mercy! Mercy!

My sister Jane doesn't look quite the same as she did when she was a kid, but that curly hair gives her away. In this photo, "young" Janie is seen horsing around with family friend Maynard MacKiddie. Janie really enjoyed when our family visited Maynard, his wife Hazel and their sons, which we did frequently in those days.
