new SCRIBBLES VIDEO | Everybody Say LOVE - My Mom's Birthday 2023

Here we go folks, the annual lowdown on our birthday party for my mom.

Mom said at this year's gathering that she would be just as happy with us simply getting together without the theme parties and of course I know that.

I mean really now.... Games and goody bags are things associated with kid's parties. Yet I still give them out. It's a fun project for me to work on each year in January, a month that's typically kinda blah for me and many of you. Thinking up a theme and game and menu for a party is a great distraction if nothing else.

And of course it's always a blessing to gather with family for another fun party. I try to make it as much about them as the birthday girl. She gets the gifts, but no one walks out empty handed.

When I look at the finished video I wish I had even more Valentine hearts on the walls. That's another aspect of the party equation. I must do each party as frugally as possible. For what my budget was I think I did okay.

Join Mr. Sock as he gives you a tour of my place all decorated in hearts and balloons for our Everybody Say Love party. Then get a bird's eye view of the party (the cake is awesome) followed by a message from 92.9 The Grand DJ Rock "N" Ray Michaels.

PASSAGES | Brian Hay

----- OBITUARY -----

BRIAN HAY - May 26, 1955 - February 16, 2023

It is with extreme sadness our family announces the passing of Brian Charles Hay after a lengthy, courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving husband, Scott Sauder, of 23 years, a marriage full of adventures and smiles. He was a loving son of Kenneth Hay (2000) and Irene Hay (2008), father to Colin Hay (Francesca), Daniel Hay (Rena), an incredible uncle to Shelby and Ian Blackley and a dear brother-in-law to Stacey and Terry Blackley. Brian leaves behind his loving cat Stanley, who loves and misses him dearly.

Brian was an altruistic, compassionate and dedicated man who was always there when you needed him. He was a role model for the next generation and volunteered his time to better his community. Brian’s unique, dry sense of humour and love for everything crafty kept you entertained for hours.

Brian was many things to many people – a 40-year police officer with the Niagara Region (retired 2017), active in Proud To Be Your Friend, World LGBTIQ+ Criminal Justice Professionals, Ham Radio enthusiast with ONTARS, an active member of CanWarn, a Mason (Lodge #616), a Scoutmaster, a member of the Southern Cruisers Motorcycle Club (Sarg), a carpenter, an electrician, an honest friend, and animal lover.

Special thanks to the nurses and staff of HGH, WCGH, and GNGH for their exemplary care of Brian during his final fight. Your compassion and kindness will never be forgotten.

Visitation will take place Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at Davidson Funeral Home, 135 Clarence Street, Port Colborne, between 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. A private interment will occur at a later date. A celebration of life will be held on what would have been Brian’s 68th birthday, with more details to follow. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Online guest register and condolences are available at www.davidsonfuneralhome.com

SCRIBBLES VIDEO | A Trip to the Beach

Every year I come up with a different theme for my mom's birthday party. This year it was A Trip to the Beach - in direct contrast to the weather outside.

Ironically, we had to move the party up a day because a few days before hand we got hit with more snow. Not as bad as a few weeks ago, but still enough that we gave the road crews time to clear the way for my guests to get here.

Join me as I show you, step by step, how I put my beach look together. Who knows, maybe you'll feel inspired to do your own Beach party. We hope so.

OBITUARY -ROBERT JAMES STEEL (JIM STEEL)

We are saddened to announce the sudden passing of Robert James (Jim) Steel on Saturday, February 4th at the age of 78. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Maria and his parents Ted and Myrtle. He will be missed by his daughters Catharine (Jim), Carolyn (Tim), his grandchildren Robert (Melissa), Callum (Sarah), Jessica (Matthew) and his great-granddaughter Hailey. Also missing him is his companion Diane Christy, his nieces and nephews, and many cousins, especially Ginny Cobley, who was more like a sister. And last but not least his beloved bulldog Joe Friday.

Jim wasn't one to sit still behind a school desk. He left school at a young age to join the Canadian Navy and sailed on the HMCS Madeline during the cold war. After leaving the navy he was employed by Mckinnon Industies (which became General Motors in 1969). He had an unerring sense of what was right and just and became active in the labour movement fighting for better working conditions and fair wages.

Wanting to know more about his paternal grandfather and his roll in the Great War led Jim to became one of Canada's leading experts on the First World War and Canada's role in it. He researched and co-authored four books on the War and was Joseph Boyden's primary consultant in the writing of Three Day Road.

Jim loved life. He was intelligent, and creative. He played the guitar, and painted delightful, irreverent, colourful paintings. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He was one of those rare individuals who knew how to truly listen. He loved his bulldogs, or any dog for that matter. He lived large, loved to laugh, and he had one of the biggest hearts of anyone we knew. Everyone he met, he met with kindness.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Canada Legion, The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Community Care or another Charity of Your Choice.

A celebration of life will be held at Royal Canadian Legion, 15 George St. St. Catharines, on Tuesday, February 21st 3-6. "We are stardust."
