Halloween Start-Up
My first stop early Halloween Eve was to my mom Joan’s place. As is tradition, I helped her at the door giving out cans of pop to the trick or treaters. Most of the kids (especially the older ones) thought pop was an awesome idea. Like the delighted young guy who said my mom’s was “the best house of the night” – Mom really liked that. As popular as the pop was, there were less kids going door-to-door in mom’s neighbourhood than in the past.
This was not the case for my sister Jane, her partner Ken and son Graham. Jane told us they collected a large pillowcase full of sweets and treats throughout their neighbouring streets. I just knew Graham’s cute Cat in the Hat costume would be a hit!
Meanwhile back in Welland , Rob took his niece and nephew, Joanna and Derek, out for trick or treating. Rob says the kids were cold and tired and they returning home with pillowcases that were far from full, but still enough goodies to share and enjoy with the grown-ups.
Rob & I regrouped back at home, put our costumes on and headed off to Envy Lounge. After all this was Halloween, there was a show planned and prizes for best costumes. Would we nab prizes for our guises? We would soon find out.
Monster Ball Speaks Out Against Abuse
Usually Envy Lounge in St Catharines is closed on Sundays. Exceptions are made for special events and what’s more special than Halloween?? This was actually the club’s second Halloween bash of the weekend. They kicked things off on Friday night with a dance and costume contest. Tonight’s event was a fundraising show with tons of prizes and a great opportunity to support and learn more about the new Niagara branch of the group Gay Straight Alliance (GSA).
The objective of a GSA is to raise awareness of bullying towards minorities and in particular the LGBT community. Sadly, at a time when great strides for inclusion and equality have been made, many are still taunted and bullied because they are different or perceived to be gay or lesbian.
Also on the rise: teen suicides, often as a result of constant harassment. GSA wants to spread the word to these young victims that things will improve and offer a haven where they will feel safe and accepted. To raise funds for the cause, Envy’s Monster Ball included a 50/50 draw, prize baskets and apple-bobbing (with one apple containing a $100 bar tab). All the performers appearing on stage also donated their tips to GSA.
Taking to the stage for this event were Frankie Stante, Deanna Stevens-Dior, Katana, Brett Woods and others. Always hot and witty, Renown impersonator Claudia Silva* acted as primary host of the show, and kept us in stitches and remembering to reach into our pockets to donate more funds to the cause.
Claudia* it was a nice night out, Rob & I really enjoyed ourselves -as always! See you soon -sooner than you may think!
