Fans of The Young & the Restless will have much to look forward to this spring, as the popular daytime drama pays tribute to Kristoff St. John and welcomes back cast members.
Over the past couple years, many viewers and stars expressed their dissatisfaction with the direction executive producer /head writer Mal Young took the show. New characters were paraded out on a frequent basis, while long time characters were given bit parts.
Eric Braeden, who plays Victor Neuman was not shy with his remarks about Young. He told reporters that Young was trying to write his character out and he was unhappy with the way Mal had introduced groups of new characters who weren't directly linked to existing storylines. Doug Davidson (Paul Williams) shared similar sentiments as he watched his character's screen time diminish.
Mal Young left the show recently, ushering in some big changes. Most notably being the return of Michelle Stafford as Phyllis. Stafford left the show in 2013, after portraying Phyllis for 16 years. She took a role on General Hospital and her Y&R character was recast, with Gina Tognoni taking over the part. While fans may be happy to see Michelle return to the Y&R, it's a bittersweet reunion, as in means Gina has been given the pink slip.
Also returning to Genoa City is Greg Rikaart as Kevin Fisher. Rikaart left the Y&R in 2017 and took on the role of Leo on Days of Our Lives. Greg is slated to return later in the spring.
In February, Y&R mourned the sudden passing of Kristoff St. John, who played Neil Winters. Although they acknowledged St. John's passing when it happened, his character’s passing won’t be addressed until later this month. Shemar Moore (S.W.A.T./Criminal Minds) will return for two episodes as Neil’s brother Malcolm. The series will also feature a special tribute episode, where the actors will reminisce about their time with St. John. As they won’t be in character, other past cast members will be joining the memorial, including Victoria Rowell (Drucilla) and Mishael Morgan (Hillary). Jess Walton (Jill) and Eileen Davidson (Ashley) will also be featured.
