No Twinkie comeback in Canada, manufacturer says
By QMI Agency
As the U.S. prepares for the return of the Twinkie in July, Canadians will have to add the treat to their cross-border shopping list because no distribution is planned for Canada.
Hostess, which makes Twinkies and other snacks, has confirmed the return of the cream-filled cakes on July 15 with the slogan "The Sweetest Comeback In The History Of Ever."
But it's bittersweet for Canadians, as a spokewoman for the company told QMI Agency there is "no distribution in Canada."
Hostess filed for bankruptcy in 2012 and sold its products in pieces, with Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo buying Twinkies and other Hostess cakes for $410 million.
Montreal-based Saputo had previously distributed Hostess cakes in Canada but couldn't be reached for comment Monday.
Hostess's president also said the company may tweak some recipes and is considering gluten-free or sugar-free treats.
