NEW SCRIBBLES VIDEO | Going Green in the Valley

Even if we actually aren't, we're all welcome to feel a wee bit Irish on St. Patrick's Day. One place where that really holds true is the town of Douglas, Ontario, located in the Ottawa Valley. The entire town goes all out for St. Patrick's celebrations and residents decorate their homes, much like we would do for Christmas or Halloween.

I had the pleasure of partying on St. Patrick's Day at the Douglas Hotel many moons ago. It was a fond memory that always brings a big grin to my face...these folks really know how to have a good time, even if some of their sing along tunes are a bit queer.  LOL!

A major part of the Douglas festivities, is their St. Patrick's Day parade. This year, in honour of Canada's 150th birthday, the parade was slated to include 150 floats.  Although the frigid temperatures caused a few last minute drop outs, the parade was still a roaring success.

I have cousins who live in Douglas and nearby town Renfrew (where I was born.) They participate in the annual parade each year. Here's a short video of them enjoying this year's big gala.

This one and half minute brief video took over three and a half hours to complete... What can I say, I'm very picky about trying to get these clips "just right" ENJOY!

VIDEOS | Love Has NO Labels

Wrestler, body builder, actor, John Cena is all of those...but what I like most about him is his attitude. This next ad is a good example (and yes, I know he didn't write it, but he stands up for it and that's what counts.)

YOU | Hair's the Story, of a Lovely Lady...

YOU | Love on the Rocks

Scotties Tournament of Hearts curling competition 2017 was held in St. Catharines at the Meridian Centre, Feb 18 - 26 and our Fort Erie pal Pam Saltzberry was among the many cheering the teams to victory.  Above, Pam poses with the Scotties Tournament of Hearts trophy.

It is so invigorating to see downtown St. Catharines drawing in big sports events and concerts at the Meridian Centre and First Ontario Performing Arts Centre. Make s me proud to live in the Garden City.

KIDS | Service With a Smile

Scribbles website is set up through Blogger. I've used them to give you your Scribbles fix since 2011. We have accumulated quite an archive all about our Scribbles pals. Scribbles time warp will bring you some of our favourite posts from the past 6 years.
We kick off this new feature with a snowy blast from November 2014, featuring our friend Dylan. It's been a few years since this was first featured and the Ottawa Valley does get a fair amount of snow, so we're not sure if Dylan is still as happy to see all that white stuff, now that he's had plenty of it to shovel over the past few years.
The text accompanying these pix is what was written when this post first debuted.

NEW SCRIBBLES VIDEO | Jody Swims with Manatees

Jody Edwards unique adventures at Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida continue to amaze. This time around our friend -who normally calls St Catharines home - went for a little swim....WITH MANATEES! Using part of Jody's underwater footage, we put together this brief clip. It's almost like being there (who am I trying to kid, eh? LOL)  Enjoy!

CLASSIC COUNTDOWN |

Our Top Ten Photos of All Time*

*These were the top ten photos in our 2012 special feature 'Sixty Six Perfect Pix'. I can think of several great photos that have been taken since this countdown, but the following ten still make me smile and I'm betting they'll do the same for you.

The descriptions that accompany each pix are what were written when these first appeared in our countdown, 5 years ago.

10- PAPINEAU PERFECTION

The Adirondack chairs are waiting for you on the deck of the Convery family's cottage in Papineau Lake, ON. This photo was taken a few Summer's ago when Timmi and I joined Becky and pals for a "girls weekend" (we fit in perfectly).

The cozy getaway didn't see many guests this past Summer as a modern new cottage was being built, but we're certain that will all change next year when the weather is warm and the chairs are dusted off, waiting for our return.

 9 - SITTING PRETTY

Looking oh so cute in her sunglasses, shaded from the sun by her colourful beach umbrella, little Tatum seems to have found a true friend in Bob, who looks quite interested in what she may have in her hand. This classic pix goes back several years and sadly, Bob passed on several years ago, but this magical moment is preserved forever.

8 - DOWN ON THE FARM

There's just so much this going on this photo, it really does speak for itself. This oldie was taken in the mid 60's on the Farquharson's farm, as everyone admires the duckling that cousin Doug is holding. And in case there was any doubt, yes, that bespeckled lad wearing the bowtie, looking on in awe is indeed me.  OY VAY!

 7 - WHAT'S COOKIN' GOOD LOOKIN'?

OK, this photo officially takes the prize as being the oldest in our entire collection of 66 pix. It's little Joanie Simpson playing with her pots and pans creating an imaginery meal. Some things don't change much. These days my mom Joan Storie can still often be found rattling her pots and pans. Fortunately for us, the food she prepares is no longer make belief and very VERY delicious.  Yes, I will have a second helping please.

6 - COME DINE ON ME

I've heard of inviting friends over for a bite, but this photo from 1979 takes the cake. What on earth would possess me to lay on the table with a stock of celery in my mouth while my pals prepare to dig in? Well, the answer to that question will remain up in smoke, but I think the next time I'll have potato chips on hand for our munchies...LOL!

 5 -I'VE GOT A "SINK-ING" FEELING

OK, so my pun is pretty lame, but luckily this classic photo isn't. Here we have our pal Megan Fox enjoying a bath in her grandparents kitchen sink. This one always makes me laugh out loud.  Now 23 years old, we assume Megan no longer uses a sink to keep clean, but maybe we should ask her boyfriend Andy just to make sure. Hahaha.

 4 - IT'S DEEPER THAN IT LOOKED

Cousin Jeanne hangs on tight to her friend Marty Wilson as they trudge through the Ottawa Valley snow, in this frigid funny photo from days gone by. While Jeanne and Marty's daughters Megan and Jessica look on , I stood behind the camera, also knee-deep in the white stuff and laughing so wildly I could barely take this pix.

3 - THE LAST MAN STANDING

I didn't need recreational or prescription drugs to make me smile on the memorable day in 2001 that this photo was taken. As seen on Scribbles several times now, here I am frolicking in the white sands along the shore of Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas.  The once-in-a-lifetime getaway was thanks to my friend Jeff Stewart, who invited me along to the remote location for a week of rest and relaxation.

I will never forget the amazing view we had. One afternoon I walked alone for several hours along the shore. It was as if  I was the last man on earth, surrounded by blue sky, soft warm sand and ocean for as far as the eye could see. I looked like a well-done lobster when I eventually returned to Jeff at our condo, but I didn't mind as I had experienced the most spiritual moment of my lifetime.

 2 - SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION

For those of you who aren't familiar with the pix above, let me set the scene for you. After a filling meal, everyone gathered in my parents living room for a family photo. As we fused over who should stand where, my mom moved my stepdad slightly to the left. Still digesting his dinner, dad farted when mom touched his sides. The results....this rib-splitting photo of our reactions. You just couldn't recreate this moment if you tried. Luckily for us, this photo captured it forever.

 1 - KOOKY CUB

During a recent with my psychotherapist, he asked me to recall times when I felt truly happy. Feeling pretty down at the time, I was hard-pressed to come up with many. Looking at the photo above, I think I've found one. I believe I would have been about 10 years old when this pix of me in my Cub Scout uniform was taken. I'm proudly giving the official Cub salute and boy was I thrilled.

Being in Cubs was far more fun than I would have expected, although Housekeeping was probably the only badge I ever earned. LOL!

And there you have it....the top ten of our 66 PERFECT PIX. To revisit the rest of the collection, click here.

PETS | Helping His Brother

HANDY HINTS |

To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.

When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking tin, use a bit of dry cake mix instead and there won't be any white mess on the outside of the cake.

Wrap celery in aluminium foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks.

Cure for headaches: take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away.

Don't throw out all that leftover wine. Freeze into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces.  (leftover wine?)

YOU | A Healthy Blow

GONE......SIX YEARS AGO...

It is hard to believe that it was 6 years ago on Feb. 28th, that Ricky Holditch passed away. He was 26.

I knew Ricky indirectly. One of his best buddies was Andrew MacNeil. I have been friends with Andrew's dad Doug since we were in high school. Ricky lived at the MacNeil's home for a while, so I got to know him when I would visit.

He was a handsome, genuine young man, who had the ability to light up a room, You didn't have to know him well, to know he was a great guy, and very loyal to his family and friends.

In the weeks leading up to his passing, Ricky did some interviews that appeared in the local papers. What a brave soul. Who had a message, telling us  "Make use of the time you do have". Something Ricky did so very well.

CLASSIC SCRIBBLES AD |

This ad was featured in Scribbles back in 2013. We were WOW-ing because we averaged 1300 visits per month.  That number has increased. These days we average around 2100 visits each month. WOO WHO!

I like this ad because it features my pals Becky (seen with me on the laptop screen) and Nancy (seen on the iPhone screen) and my mom with her cat Patches. But the part I like best is dearly departed JJ peeking over the laptop.

YOU | Much Deserved Recognition for Our Pal Eva

Congratulations to St. Catharines realtor Eva Miller who won the Master Sales Award. The award is given when a realtor is in the top 20 percent of their local real estate market, as Eva's friend Marie Zettler pointed out on Eva's facebook page.

WOO WHOO! I'm so happy for you Eva, I've seen how diligently you work and that the real estate market can sometimes be challenging, so to have earned this award, is indeed a big deal.  AWESOME!
