Change Your Day With a Positive Word

This post originally appeared in Scribbles in 2011. It has since been edited.

Sitting at the dining room table enjoying my extra-large cup o’ joe ... I began to think about the day ahead. I was a bit apprehensive this particular morning, as I knew that when I got to work, I would be manning the store all by myself.

The thought of this brought back bad memories of when I worked elsewhere, often by myself, and just how frantic and frustrated that made me.

A bit panicked at the thought of what may lie ahead of me, I came up with a word to remember throughout the day…Perception”. If I perceived things were going to be a train wreck, I’d ruin the entire day. Instead I kept thinking of my word and guess what? The day went by smoothly.

Soon, the idea of coming up with a word or phrase each day became something I did every morning while the caffeine kicked in.

When I was feeling sorry for myself about what I didn’t have in my life in comparison to others, my word of the day was “Appreciation”.

When I had a funeral to attend one day, my word was “Reflection”.

When I had a long list of things on my ‘to do’ list, that day’s word was “Serenity”.

... For me, my daily word has often helped keep me calmer and happier.

It’s not a perfect system... One day my wise word was “Relax”, but when things turned ugly, “Relax” was replaced with a major four-letter word for the remainder of the day. As a result, I was physically and mentally drained by the time night rolled in.

The next morning I looked back at what I could have done differently to have made yesterday less stressful.

My word to you is “Try”. Try coming up with your own word of the day. If your mornings are busy and hectic getting the kids ready for school, etc, pick your word on the ride in to work or after the kids have left for the day.

Perhaps bedtime is a better time for you to come up with a word for tomorrow.

Wherever and whenever, there’s never a bad time to take a few moments and come up with an appropriate word to live by each day.

Mr. Sock is feeling very patriotic (whether he wanted to be or not) in this new Scribbles VIDEO.

Although times are tough in so many ways, I'm still extremely grateful to live in Canada. There's truly not many other places I would want to call home.

Enjoy the long weekend. Here's hoping the skies are clearer.

Now here's our video: Mr. Sock in The Smokey Anthem.

scribbles VIDEO | Fort Erie Pride 2023

Although Scribbles wasn't able to attend this year's Fort Erie Pride on June 24, we felt like we were there thanks to video footage and photos by Stacy Hayward, Justin Preston, Michael McCready and (watching from the sidelines in the comfort of his wheelchair) Marc Poisson Leboeuf.

We thank each of them for allowing Scribbles to blend their pix and video clips into a new Scribbles Video. Hope you like it!

My "Little Nephew" Graduates....HIGH SCHOOL!

It’s hard for me to believe that my nephew Graham has graduated from high school and in October turns 18.

Where did the time go?

I remember when he was a kid and we used to go for drives in “Uncle Ken’s green car” along with my lovable little dog Timmi.

I remember how excited Graham would get when we had sleepovers at my place and I will never forget his first 3D movie experience.

We sure did have a lot of fun and I am so grateful for all those treasured memories.

Congratulations Graham, I am very proud of all you have accomplished and I am thrilled you have a game plan for what you want to achieve next.

Love Uncle Ken

Pride Month Wraps Up

HERE'S ALL 7 OF OUR "it's PRIDE month" SCRIBBLES COVER BANNERS FEATURING SOME OF OUR LGBTQ+2S FRIENDS & ALLIES
Although marred by noisy protests, blatant lies and malicious slurs, Pride Month in Niagara & surrounding areas was still a lot of fun, with exciting events running all month long.

Pride Niagara started the festivities with a Kick Off Party featuring Detox from Rupaul's Drag Race, followed by Pride flag raising ceremonies, the 10th Annual Unity Awards, Pride Prom, Speaking Out with Pride, Pride in the Park and more.

Other events throughout the region were Living Out Stories hosted by Falynn Shaw who interviewed Hexe Noir and Safe Space Niagara's Pride Fest & Sounds Gay, Count Me In (all funds went to Safe Space Niagara). Rounding off the month was the 2nd Annual Fort Erie Pride, with the notable absence of event co-organizer Marc Poisson Leboeuf, still recovering from a serious accident in May.

Decked out in his festive rainbow hat, Mr. Sock was on hand (get it..."ON HAND"... LOL) for Pride in the Park, where he got to meet many of our Scribbles friends and received shout outs from people he didn't even know, but who sure knew him ("I'm crushing on Mr. Sock" said one happy admirer.)

Throughout the month, Scribbles "cover" banners featured numerous LGBTQ+2S friends and allies. In case you missed any, or just wish to see them again, here's our various collages.

What a fine group of kind, caring, individuals, all of whom Scribbles is so proud to call our friends. Shine bright my friends, shine bright.

May the joy, love and hope you feel at Pride remain with you throughout the year and comfort you should you find yourself dealing with misguided hatred and intolerance.

We had a great visit with our St. Catharines friends Suzi & Bill. They both enjoy Mr. Sock, but had never met him. I had told Suzi Mr. Sock would join us for our visit, but what she did not know was that I would be bringing almost ever single different Mr. Sock for a show & tell session. It was a lot of fun. Here's a clip of me unpacking the duffle bag filled with Mr. Sock's.

Proud Friendship

Yesterday I went to N.E.T. Campground with my best friend Doug. I have known Doug & his wife Heather since the beginning of time and they have been there for me at various chaotic moments of my life (and there have been some real doozies.)

On route to the campground, Doug had to stop at his place to pick a few things up. I was touched to see a large Pride flag waving in the wind at the front of their home along side a big Canada flag. In the backyard were smaller rainbow & Canadian flags and Heather had more flags for Doug and I to put out at the trailer.

Seeing that big flag flapping proudly in the wind in front of Doug & Heather’s place was so touching and I want to thank them both for doing that and being such amazing life long friends.

I saw a post the other day with pix of someone’s home with a Pride flag out front. They went on to say that they did that to let those in the LGBTQ+2S community know that their home is a safe and supportive space. They did it to let noisy, misinformed protesters know they very much disagree with them.

Thank you to everyone who is an ally to the LGBTQ+2S community. Together let’s build a world where everyone is free to be themselves without harassment or harm.

EDITORIAL |

Hello Everyone,

It’s been a while since Scribbles offered up a multitude of new posts at the same time. This year there’s been several Mr. Sock videos, some moving tribute posts and series 4 of Battle of the Best, but we haven’t brought you several new things at once for a while, so this is pretty exciting.

Our ‘what’s NEW with YOU’ section makes a feeble attempt at showing you what everyone has been up to. Of course it barely scratches the surface, but we DO still have plenty to share.

Scribbles Rainbow Connection Contest asks you to tell us your favourite colour, for a chance of winning a collection of awesome rainbow bling.

WOOF!  Joe Friday is back with both new adventures as well as a collection of Classic Joe’s. With such a large archive of Joe material, Scribbles gratefully continues to feature Jim’s bulldog buddy for your amusement.

Mr. Sock has made appearances in several locations and has young fans watching him from the Ottawa Valley & Niagara to British Columbia and likely beyond. We have exclusive pix sent in by Scribbles pals Carrie, Gloria and Jackie. I love that you guys like Mr. Sock, I enjoy hangin’ out with him and sharing that silliness with you. Great News! We have a new video coming soon…so Mr. Sock could soon be returning to a big screen TV near you!

I am finally getting a grip on being a bit hard on myself when it comes to new Scribbles stuff. I had hoped to have much of what you will see today published already. I get down on myself when my physical or mental pains prevent me from creating Scribbles at the pace I want. When I CAN do stuff and the creative juices are flowing, THAT’S when it is meant to be done. Not on some preconceived deadline only I know about. It’s always more fun when I’m feeling well.

I have been able to put together some entertaining posts that I hope many of you in Scribbles land will enjoy.

Ken

scribbles REVIEW | DCT Production Offers Tons of Hope

Dunnville Community Theatre returned to the spotlight in mid May with David S. Craig’s ‘Having Hope at Home’.  This time around, DCT’s live production took place at Knox Presbyterian Church, transformed into an old rundown farm house, thanks to cleverly arranged theatre props.

From the moment the show began to the instant it finished, the talented performers grabbed the audience’s attention, as they brought life to their colourful characters.

We had Carolyn (as portrayed by Dana Hauser) who lives in the farmhouse with her French Canadian partner Michel (Gordon Huffman) and her bumbling grandfather Russell (Lee Smith). Carolyn & Michel are expecting their first child and have invited Carolyn’s parents Bill (Darrell Baker) and Jane (Ellie Bloomfield) to join them for dinner. The catch is that Carolyn has decided upon a home birth using a midwife, Dawn (Hailey Gibb), a revelation that rubs her father the wrong way, seeing he is a doctor and the head of obstetrics at the local hospital.

The plot thickens as Carolyn goes into labour midway through dinner. What follows is a mixture of humour and high drama, with some valuable lessons learned by the time of the baby’s arrival.

Compliments of the production’s director Jean Furlong and DCT treasurer & promotions officer Claire Vanden Pol, I attended the show with my sister Kim on May 13th.  My concerns that the production was being held in a church meant we may have rigid, uncomfortable seating that would wreak havoc with my chronic pain, were quickly alleviated when I discovered the pews were completely padded… Hallelujah!

During intermission, I spoke briefly with Claire, who shared with me that they had to do some last minute blocking changes, as the church’s stage was smaller than what the rehearsal area had been. This meant that some scenes in which a few characters are supposed to be in another room, out of earshot of the others, actually took place only a few feet away. When this occurred, the actors that weren’t a part of the scene simply stood silently, somewhat like statues, and we effortlessly bought into the fact that they weren’t supposed to be seeing or hearing what we were.

This is something I always find extremely endearing about Dunnville Community Theatre. They turn minimal props into larger than life sets. Combined with the group’s mad acting skills and you have productions that move and entertain unlike any others. ‘Having Hope at Home’ was another shining example of that. Hallelujah indeed!
