REVIEW:

A Play Within a Play Done Up in a Big Way

Each year, students and faculty from Laura Secord Secondary School in St Catharines take extra-curricular activity to a whole new level with live performances of well renown plays. This year’s production was the Broadway smash “The Drowsy Chaperone” a rousing comedy which takes us back to the glitz and glamour of 1920’s musicals.

Directed by Ms. Tracy Thorpe, the show is a play within a play as we’re guided through the soundtrack of “The Drowsy Chaperone” courtesy of the “Man in chair” who speaks directly to the audience and was superbly portrayed by Duncan Chambers.

My flutist niece Erin Papple was once again part of the orchestra, as was our pal Gail's daughter Katie Mallory who played trombone. They were all hidden behind stage until curtain call, at which time they and the stellar cast received a heartfelt standing ovation from the crowd.

With set decoration true to the original and performances that rival that of any Broadway production, it was once again hard to believe that this was a high school musical. It was obvious this was a massive undertaking and that everyone had fun putting it all together.

My family and I enjoyed "The Drowsy Chaperone" Sat. Feb. 25th. The play wraps up with shows Mar. 1 thru 3.
