First haircut aids young cancer patients

WELLAND - Four-year-old MacKenzie Robinson had never had a haircut. Not even a trim.
But that all changed this week when the junior kindergarten student chopped off her beautiful brown locks to be donated to Wigs for Kids, a non-profit organization that makes wigs for children with cancer who have lost their hair.
“I’m not sure where she got the idea, but she mentioned doing it,” Michelle Weasner said about why her daughter decided to cut her hair.
“(MacKenzie) said she wants to donate her hair to little boys and girls who have no hair,” the proud mom said.
After Weasner learned of her daughter’s intentions, she mentioned it to MacKenzie’s teacher, Jeannette Andrea MacGregor at Fitch Street Public School, who suggested MacKenzie trim her tresses in front of her fellow students.
In her 43 years of teaching, MacGregor can’t recall a time when a kindergarten student decided to donate his or her hair to cancer patients.
In another matter of caring, MacKenzie’s classmates raised $50 in change and $110 was collected from staff at Blue Star Restaurant to be donated to A Child’s Voice Foundation, a non-profit organization that creates programs for financially disadvantaged children.
